Masks

The Commedia masks were half masks which covered the face from the nose upward.

The masks were not just costumes, they created character.The mask led the actor towards certain gestures, voices, movements.

Such masks gave the actor license to act in unusual ways. Improvisation also came easier to actors with the masks on, since the masks suggested certain ways of behaving.
