The Idea of Commedia
Commedia dell'Arte, although officially "the comedy of professional actors," gave the actors much room for improvisation within a fixed plot. A general story would be outlined while the actors/characters would create dialogue and business to go with the story. None of these created stories were written down but could be varied according the audience, time and place. If the audience was getting bored, actors could insert lazzi into the play.
