Mac OS X
6-19-02
Trying hard to make the OS great for education
very stable platform, no crashes, great for newbies
also great for power users
Released initially in Oct 2001
With multiple language support, you can have the entire class work in the language of the course
OS 9 apps that don't directly access hardware should run fine in Classic mode of OS X
the presenter just took questions at the end
Cool new things you can do in Mac OS X
- iMovie
- iPhoto (only OS X)
- iDVD (only OS X)
- iTunes
graphics architechture for iPhoto and iDVD is not available in OS 9 so it can't run there
Run SHARITY to allow OS X browsing on windows networks
- shareware
- should be included in Jaguar (late summer relate)
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/sharity.html
Jaguar details:
- the OS built for education
- best implementation for universal access
- improved search functions
- desktop management
- new network admin and peripheral management
Apple has transferred to IP based networking rather than appletalk
- have to know the ip address
- new feature of Jaguar: Rendezvous
-- zero configuration requirements on user part, can more easily recognize and connect to network resources
Before you had to know server's IP address, including SMB browsing and sharing to WinNT servers, support for active directory (MS), and WILL allow MAIL program to work directly with EXCHANGE server
New OS X server: Jaguar Server
- benefit of servers is that they should improve the desktop experience
Educational needs for servers:
- share resources and computers
- maintain separate student files
- access information and user files securely
- develop and distribute digital content
Management tools in OS X
- manage classrooms
- boot mac systems from the network
- setup and install across the network
- use sigle sign on and automatic configuration of desktop systems
- manage cross-platform print and file services
New application in jaguar server: workgroup manager
- managed preferences for any environment
- completely manage the environment people have when they log into (which applications they can launch, what the dock will look like, media access (insert CDs, burn CDs, etc)
- give quotas for printing by student!
Netboot
- requires 100MB connectivity to the desktop
- boot from an image on the network
- host separate images for each department
- deploy network diagnostic and repair utilities
means on the server you have to maintain 1 system configuration and 1 application configuration
- lets you update the application 1 time in 1 place (on the server)
- then restart the clients and they get the update
- students don't have the rights to change the image on the server
Network Install (sister to Netboot)
- automates software installation
- install, upgrae, and restore mac os and your customized software
- don't have to burn custom CDs
- can just plug computer into the network and blast a configuration right to that computer, then sent it out wherever it needs to go
- automated configurations through scripting
- maintain multiple images on the server
Open directory supported on jaguar
- central database of users
- LDAPv3 Directory Server
- DHCP server
Apple is suggesting you have one central database of student info
- supplied within jaguar, based on LDAPv3
- this is an open standard
In this environment student settings follow them around wherever they go
Apple File Servers
- network mac os x home directories
- autoreconnect to server
- secure and encrypt file tranfer across the network and the internet
- implement Kerberos v5 authentication (uses certificates for authentication)
-- more important for higher ed settings
Additonal services
- apache web server
- QT streaming server
- QT broadcaster (coming in Jaguar with QT6)
QT Broadcaster
- stream realtime audio and video over your newtork
- mpeg4
- all QT codecs
- firewire capture
- reliable transport, unicast, and multicast
- realtime feedback
- save the broadcast as a QT file
- appletalk scripting
So not a two step process, the files are stored on the server after the live broadcast for video on demaned
When Jaguar? Late summer 2002!
Universal Access
- hold mouse over a button, computer reads it back to you
- frame rate of quicktime doesn't drop even when you zoom in
