Undergraduate Admissions

In order to complement the size of the School of Music at Texas Tech, the Tuba-Euphonium Studio maintains a size of 12-15 undergraduate students, all of whom are pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree in Performance (MUPF), Teacher Certification (MUTC), or Composition (MUCP). There are also limited spots in the studio for students pursuing the Master of Music (MM) and Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degrees in Tuba or Euphonium Performance.

All students wishing to be in the studio must be accepted to both Texas Tech University and the School of Music. Each requires its own separate application, and admission to the School of Music requires a live audition (taped auditions are acceptable under very special circumstances). Audition dates are usually scheduled in February and March, with admission and scholarship decisions made by mid-March.

Auditions for the Tuba and Euphonium studio continue to be very competitive. Successful students in recent years have started the application process early and have followed up with regular contact with Dr. Wass. Most (but not all) who are accepted study privately on their instruments and have reached the state level in UIL solo and ensemble or in TMEA or ATSSB All-State competitions. Many also own their instruments, or have begun saving money to make this important purchase. High School academics are also important, as admission standards at Texas Tech are rather high.

Scholarships are also very competitive but are available for top students. Scholarships will not cover a student's entire tuition costs, and most scholarships are for amounts that cover less than half of tuition. It is crucial that students pursue all scholarships and financial aid that are available to them. Some students in recent years have been able to fund their entire tuition and fees and even part of their other expenses through a combination of music and academic scholarships from Texas Tech and other scholarships from their high schools or communities.
