After reading chapter ten of
Maniac Magee, we begin to realize how Mars Bar got his name. He is
constantly eating a candy bar. Maniac made a bold move in this chapter by
biting off a piece of Mars Bar's candy bar. Have you ever wondered what the
"perfect" candy bar might be made of? What would be the name of this candy
bar? What would the wrapper look like? Today, you are going to make Willy
Wonka proud! You will have the opportunity to create and design the "World's
Best Candy Bar" in this WebQuest.

There are hundreds of different candy cars available to you to buy because everyone has his or her own ideas of which is the best. Today, you will create and design your candy bar. First, you will individually describe in words the perfect candy bar. Next, you will compare descriptions in order to create ideas about your own candy bar. Then, you will need to create a name for the candy bar and design a wrapper. In addition to creating a name for the candy bar, the wrapper will also have the name of the company in which you work for.

**The following
questions will require you to use your answer sheet. Write everything it
asks
you to because YOU WILL BE TURNING IT IN!
1. In the blank provided on your answer sheet, describe in words the "perfect" candy bar. What shape would it be-flat and square or round and chunky? What ingredients would it have? How will the ingredients be layered? Will it be soft and chewy or hard and crunchy? Will it be covered in chocolate?
2. Go to www.smm.org/sln/tf/c/crosssection/namethatbar.html - There will be twelve different kinds of candy bars at this website. On your answer sheet, guess what kind of candy bar the pictures are. After you have guessed each candy bar, click on the picture of the candy bar to see if you are correct.
3. Now it is time to think about your own candy bar. Ingredients could make or break your newly created candy bar. You will research the different ingredients on three types of candy bars. You may choose two of your own to research, but you MUST research the Mars Bar. How do you do this?
4. Go to www.bradkent.com-Click on Wrappers, Click on any of the candy bars listed to see the ingredient labels. Mars Bar is not listed, so you will have to type in Mars Bar at the top of the screen where it says, "See if I've got your favorite wrapper." Keep these ingredients in mind when you create your own.
5. To make the perfect candy bar, you
should look at candy bars that are popular today. Visit each of the
following links
to research how you want your candy bar to be (shape, size, texture,
ingredients, etc...)
http://www.hersheys.com/home.asp (Click on "Explore our Products")

http://www.3musketeers.com/facts.shtml
5. Sketch a picture of your wrapper in the blank provided on your answer sheet. THIS IS JUST A ROUGH DRAFT! Make sure to include the name of your candy bar on the wrapper. Below your sketch, list all the ingredients that are in your candy bar. Also, be sure to include the company you work for.
6. After you have your sketch complete, it is now time to work on the real thing. I don't expect you to make the actual candy bar; however, you will need the real-life candy bar wrapper. Use your knowledge of other candy bar wrappers and design your own in the blank provided on your answer sheet. We will add color later.
7. Why should people buy your candy bar? In one paragraph (at least 6 sentences), write an advertisement for your candy bar that would persuade someone to buy it. You want people to buy and eat your spectacular candy bar! This should be done on your answer sheet. Don't know what "persuade" means? Click on http://www.webster.com/ and look it up!
8. By now you should have
completed your answer sheet and completely designed a new candy bar.
Thanks for the hard work and SUPER JOB!
