Group Keyboard Information
(MUAP 1123, 1124, 2123, 2124)
Group piano instruction is a part of the School of Music's core curriculum requirement. All music majors within the school must take four semesters (MUAP 1123, 1124, 2123, and 2124) or demonstrate equivalent proficiency. The course is designed to aid in the development of general musicianship for all students and enhances the core requirements in music theory and musicology. Students will receive instruction in basic keyboard technique, reading, harmonization, transposition, and improvisation.
The text used for MUAP 1123, 1124, and 2123 is "Contemporary Class Piano" by Elyse Mach. The texts for MUAP 2124 are "The Real Easy Book" from Sher Publications and "Figured Harmony at the Keyboard" by R.O. Morris.
Students who have had prior instruction in piano may wish to CLEP out of one or more of the required piano classes. CLEP exams are typically given at the beginning of each semester and before registration. To schedule a CLEP exam, please contact the coordinator of group keyboard (Dr. Jason Sifford) at (806)742-2270 ext. 257 or at jason.sifford@ttu.edu
Requirements for the CLEP exams are found in the Undergraduate Student Handbook and can be downloaded here. This file requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.
The keyboard component of the curriculum should be completed during the first two years of study. All students should register for a group keyboard class each semester unless they have already completed the CLEP exam for that course. Intent to CLEP at a later date is not an adequate rationale for not registering for a group keyboard class!
