Throughout these “wars”, artists have produced artwork dealing with the different aspects of these “wars”. Pablo Picasso’s Guernica was painted in response to the 1937 bombing of civilians during the Spanish Civil War (Guernica). Kathe Kollwitz, a female German Expressionist artist, produced work dealing with the oppression of the working class and the loss of her son during World War I (Kollwitz Museum). Franz Marc’s The Wolves (Balkan War), 1913 was a response to the tension leading up to World War I. More modern responses to racial conflicts would include Native American artist Jaune Quick-To-See Smith. Emma Amos and Carrie Mae Weems deal with both issues of gender and race in their works. Female artist, Cindy Sherman does photography that deals with gender issues (biography, photos). Environmental artist, Lynne Hull builds trees out of recycled material to provide dwellings for birds.
