Pablo Picasso's GuernicaWhat is war?  War is a conflict, a disagreement of ideas or interests.  War is not confined to military combat.  Through the centuries there have been many reasons for war, control of land, politics, religion, and many others.  Today we engage in wars of many kinds: war on drugs, fashion wars, technology wars, gender wars, racial wars, war on diseases, war on hunger, environmental wars, war on crime, and others.  Currently, as a country we are in the midst of a war on terrorism, which has lead us into military combat with Iraq (CNN,MSNBC).

Throughout these “wars”, artists have produced artwork dealing with the different aspects of these “wars”.  Pablo Picasso’s Guernica was painted in response to the 1937 bombing of civilians during the Spanish Civil War (Guernica). Kathe Kollwitz, a female German Expressionist artist, produced work dealing with the oppression of the working class and the loss of her son during World War I (Kollwitz Museum).  Franz Marc’s The Wolves (Balkan War), 1913 was a response to the tension leading up to World War I.  More modern responses to racial conflicts would include Native American artist Jaune Quick-To-See Smith Emma Amos and Carrie Mae Weems deal with both issues of gender and race in their works.  Female artist, Cindy Sherman does photography that deals with gender issues (biography, photos).  Environmental artist, Lynne Hull builds trees out of recycled material to provide dwellings for birds.
