Creating Web Pages

The possible methods for connecting to your website include FTP, Microsoft FrontPage, and many other web page creation tools.

Here are a few basic things you need to know in order to begin publishing your pages:

Hostname: www.webpages.ttu.edu
WebPages URL: http://www.webpages.ttu.edu
Personal Web Page URL: http://www.webpages.ttu.edu/eRaider_Username

Note: For the Personal Web Page URL, replace USERNAME with the username supplied on the information sheet when you obtained the account.  So, for example, if your username was jdoe, then your URL would be "http://www.webpages.ttu.edu/jdoe". Use this URL to view your web page in a web browser.

When you type your URL in a web browser, the browser is looking for an index page or a home page. This page has to be a certain name in order the web browser to find it. So when saving your website, make sure your first page, or homepage, is saved with one of the following names: index.html, index.htm, home.html, home.htm, default.html, or default.htm.

Note: If you do not save at least one file with one of the above file names, you will get a message of "Forbidden" when you attempt to view the web page in a web browser.

FrontPage - Publishing your web page with Microsoft FrontPage is the simplest way to go. The first thing you must do is connect to the internet. Once you are connected, you need to open your web page in FrontPage. The instructions below are based on the version of FrontPage you are using.
FrontPage 2002 & 2003 Start FrontPage. Open the "File" menu, and choose "Open Site...". At the very bottom, next to "Folder Name:" type "http://www.webpages.ttu.edu/eRaider_Username", where eRaider_Username is replaced with your username. A window will pop up asking for your username and password. Enter the username (in the form of ttu\eraider) and password given to you on your information sheet. To create a new page, go to "File -> New..." and choose "Page...".

To create a new page, go to "Tools -> Show FrontPage Editor", and choose "File -> New". Create your page how you would like and then save it. Make sure to name your main page one of the names given above.

FTP
- When using FTP to transfer files to your account, you will automatically be logged into the correct directory.  Your current directory after logging in is the root directory of your website.

In order to be able to provide web services to all students, faculty, and staff, we have to limit the amount of disk space each user can have. All users are limited to 50 megabytes of disk space. If you are trying to save a page on your account and the save fails, it is most likely because you have exceeded your disk quota.

Technology Support offers shortcourses in both HTML and Microsoft FrontPage. All students, faculty, and staff who would like to have a personal web page but don't know how to create a page are encouraged to sign up for these classes. Those interested can go to the Technology Support Shortcourse website for more information.
