Strengths and Special Features of Our Program
- Our ensembles are primarily undergraduate
driven. TTU provides an ensemble experience at the highest level,
but this quality is generated through exceptional undergraduate
talent. As an undergraduate music major, you are more likely to
be a part of these ensembles than at many other programs our size.
- Large program features: competition to promote
quality, solid base of talented players on all instruments resulting in
quality ensembles, travel opportunities, extensive alumni base with
which to network, outstanding national reputation, full applied faculty
that is highly visible nationally and internationally.
- Community environment: large school numbers
but
small school feel, high level of contact with faculty, students
are treated as individuals, supportive environment within applied
studios, music “family” environment, faculty work hard for each
student’s future success.
- Progressive and
innovative pedagogies. The clarinet studio utilizes an innovative
group lesson and private lesson format. Our system has piqued the
interest of colleagues throughout the country, and was the focus of a
prestigious fellowship with the University of Colorado where the ideas
and practices were introduced in a faculty exchange.
- Focus on professional
development: Students conduct themselves in an energetic,
ambitious and professional manner. Training focuses on production
over intention, positive collegial interaction, discipline, work ethic,
intellectual and artistic development, ambition and self-motivation,
organizational skills, practical skills and training to be successful
in a music career.
- Leadership: The
clarinet program makes an effort to recruit future leaders in the area
of music. Items beyond playing ability, such as academics,
leadership positions, being articulate and ambition are a major factor
for acceptance into the program. While at Texas Tech, it is
expected that clarinet students will work to a higher
standard.
- Professional playing
opportunities. There are various opportunities for students to
play professionally in regional orchestras. Usually the 2nd
clarinet position in the Lubbock Symphony is held by a talented TTU
student. There are other opportunities in other regional
orchestras for professional experience as well.
- Expanding ideas on music
and art. Mastery of clarinet fundamentals is not an end, but is
seen as a beginning to explore musical artistry, mental concentration
in performance, developing an expressive inner voice, and being able to
communicate to others through music and teaching. Students
will be expected to expand their intellectual understanding of music
and the arts by researching related information to their weekly
studies. These ideas are to create deeper perspectives not only
as a clarinetist, but as a musician and conductor.
- We will help you achieve
what your goals are; whether it be attending a prestigious graduate
school (recent student is currently a teaching assistant and doctoral
candidate at the world famous Indiana University School of Music) or
teaching in the public schools in the area of your choice (most of our
students are successful in locating in the area of Texas they want to
live). The School of Music takes a personal interest in your
goals and as a faculty, we help you to reach those goals with
everything that is within our power. We are very proud of our
tradition and successful alumni.
